Procida by private boat: the island seen from the water

Procida is the smallest of the islands in the Bay of Naples and the one that has changed the least. While Capri and Ischia grew into international destinations, Procida stayed a working fishing island: three small harbors lined with pastel houses, a fortified old town on the highest point, and a pace set by the boats coming in and out rather than by tourism. It is barely four square kilometers, and almost all of it faces the sea.

Why a private boat

Every experience on this page is fully private. The boat is reserved exclusively for your group, the schedule is yours, and the skipper adapts the day to your pace and to the sea. No shared groups, no fixed commentary, no timetable imposed from outside.

On an island this small and this quiet, that difference matters: it is the difference between passing by Procida and actually spending a day inside its rhythm.

Exploring Procida on land

Procida rewards time on foot as much as time on the water. The staircase streets above Marina Corricella, the fortified citadel of Terra Murata, the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, and the quiet lanes that connect the three marinas are best discovered slowly, on a day with nowhere particular to be.

Procida: a small volcanic island that has stayed itself

Procida is one of the Phlegraean Islands, the volcanic group that also includes Ischia and the tiny reserve of Vivara, off the western edge of the Bay of Naples. Geologically it is the product of several ancient eruptive centers, and its coastline still shows that origin: low tuff cliffs, dark volcanic sand, and small bays carved into the soft rock. It is among the most densely settled islands in the Mediterranean, yet it has none of the scale of its neighbors. The whole island can be crossed on foot.

For as long as it has been inhabited, Procida has lived from the sea. Fishing shaped the harbors, and a long seafaring tradition shaped the town: boats were the economy, and the oldest quarters were built around the water rather than around a central square. In the sixteenth century, when raids from the sea were a constant threat, the population fortified the high ground of Terra Murata behind defensive walls. From the water, that history is still legible in the way the island is arranged, with its working harbors below and its walled refuge above.

What sets Procida apart today is how little of that has been smoothed away for tourism. In 2022 the island was named Italian Capital of Culture, the first island ever to hold the title, recognized not for a single monument but for an intact landscape and a living community. That same authenticity has made it one of the most filmed places in the Gulf. Marina Corricella and the streets below Terra Murata stood in for the fishing village in Il Postino (1994), Massimo Troisi’s final film, and later, together with neighboring Ischia, for the fictional town of Mongibello in The Talented Mr. Ripley. More recently the island was the setting for the Netflix series Generazione 56K. It also gave Elsa Morante the backdrop for her novel Arturo’s Island, written around the old prison at Terra Murata.

Procida from the water: the harbors and landmarks

Marina Grande

Marina Grande, on the north side, is the island’s main port and its working face: ferries and fishing boats, a waterfront church, and a long curved front of tall pastel houses that rise straight from the quay. It is the first thing most visitors see, and from the water it sets the tone of the whole island. It is also the practical landing point for going ashore and walking up into the town.

Marina Corricella

Corricella is the oldest fishing village on Procida and the image most travelers carry away. No road reaches it: the houses, painted in faded yellows, pinks, and blues, are stacked above a small harbor and linked only by the scalatinelli, the narrow staircase streets that drop toward the water. Fishing boats are still pulled up along the quay, and the early morning still belongs to the catch. From a boat just offshore, the whole amphitheater of facades opens at once, which is why it is one of the most photographed harbors in the Mediterranean. Several small restaurants line the waterfront, and a lunch or dinner stop here, rather than a quick photo, is the part of the day most guests remember.

Terra Murata

Above Corricella stands Terra Murata, the fortified old town and the highest point on the island. Built behind sixteenth-century walls to defend the population from raids, it reads from the water as a single block of stone against the sky, crowned by the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, dedicated to the island’s patron saint. Set into the citadel is the former d’Avalos palace, a noble residence later turned into a prison that remained in use until 1988. Today it can be visited on guided tours, its cells and courtyards looking out over one of the widest views in the Gulf.

Pozzo Vecchio

On the western side of the island lies the small cove of Pozzo Vecchio, a crescent of dark volcanic sand now known to many simply as the Postman’s beach, after the scenes from Il Postino filmed here. Its black sand and clear water are characteristic of Procida’s volcanic coast, and from the sea it is one of the quieter corners of the island.

Chiaiolella

Chiaiolella, on the southwest side, is the calmest of the three marinas and the most relaxed place to swim. A small harbor opens onto a wide bay with beaches and waterfront restaurants, and the rounded shape of the bay marks the rim of an old volcanic crater. It is also the gateway to Vivara, just across a short channel.

Vivara

Vivara is a small crescent-shaped islet off Chiaiolella, the remnant of an ancient volcanic crater and the most protected piece of land in the area. It is a state nature reserve, rich in Mediterranean vegetation, birdlife, and Mycenaean-era archaeological finds, and it is linked to Procida only by a long pedestrian bridge from the Santa Margherita promontory. Access on foot is limited to guided visits booked in advance, but from a private boat its wild profile and the channel between the two islands are part of the route.

When to visit Procida by boat

The Procida boat season runs from roughly April to late October. May, June, and September are the strongest months: warm but not hot, generally calm seas, and an island that never fills the way Capri does even in high summer. The light in late spring and early autumn is also the most flattering for the colored harbors, which is worth keeping in mind for couples and for anyone planning to photograph the island.

July and August bring the warmest water and the longest days. Procida stays calmer than its larger neighbors even in peak season, but the ferries and the small beaches are busier, and a private boat is the most comfortable way to keep your distance from the crowds while still going ashore where you choose. Late October through March is the off season, when most boat services wind down and conditions become unpredictable.

How to reach Procida and what a day looks like

Private boat tours to Procida can depart from Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Positano, or Amalfi, and in practice from anywhere along the coast where you are staying. The most convenient departure point is usually the one closest to your accommodation, and the exact boarding point is confirmed at booking together with the boat and itinerary.

Because the island is small, Procida is most often combined with Ischia in a single full day: the volcanic bays and thermal coast of Ischia in the morning, the colored harbors of Procida in the afternoon, with swimming stops along the way. This pairing gives a complete picture of the western, volcanic side of the Gulf, a landscape entirely different from Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Procida is also the destination of an evening experience that crosses the Gulf at golden hour and ends with dinner on the waterfront at Marina Corricella.

For guests arriving by cruise ship, departure times can be coordinated with the cruise terminal schedule.
